The countdown begins to the pilot of the Nuclear Island Big Rig

On the day that the government announces £10M in funding to support of a new nuclear power station at HInkley, we are just four days away from the pilot of Think Up’s event designed to inspire engineers to take on the challenge of nuclear new build. The Nuclear Island Big Rig is a five-day event in which a team of undergraduate engineers take on the challenge of assembling, operating and decommissioning a mock up of the primary coolant loop of a nuclear reactor. The event is designed to develop interdisciplinary team working skills, develop initiative and provide the opportunity to apply of theory in practice. Overall, students will have the opportunity to assess for themselves the potential contribution they can make through their work as an engineer to meeting the UK’s energy needs.
