Engineering for Architects at the University of Kent

Earlier this week Oliver was down at the University of Kent to co-lead structural engineering workshops for architecture students. Oliver was invited by course leader Ben Godber to demonstrate to the students how they can use the structural modelling tools on Expedition Workshed to quickly understand how apparently complex structures stand up.The students had previously been assigned a structure to study. Their course assignment is to explain how gravity loads and wind loads are transferred to the ground. Using Workshed’s Catastrophe platform, students were able to draw their structures and see which elements are in trension or compression.

Using Catastrophe to model case studies such as these seems to have been very effective for demonstrating structural principles. It is our intention therefore to make these case studies available directly through the Workshed site.
